1. Acquire information about nature of emergency, accident or disaster.

4. Determine primary needs/ specific complaints of the patient. Check for medical tag alert.
5. Obtain additional medical information including preexisting conditions, allergies, and current medication. Perform more in-depth assessment as time allows/condition warrants.
6. Determine patient's developmental level, decision-making ability, level of cognition, and competence.
7. Evaluate individual's response to the event, mood, coping abilities, personal vulnerability.
8. Ascertain knowledge of needs/injury prevention and motivation to prevent further injury.
