Mr. Behrman values friendship. He is a sixty-year-old man who lives in the apartment underneath Johnsy and Sue, who he cares very deeply about. Mr. Behrman never finishes painting what he starts, so he never is able to paint a masterpiece. Before the last leaf fell on the vine, Mr. Behrman painted one of his first and final masterpieces for Johnsy. Mr. Behrman stayed out all night in the pouring rain to paint the last Autumn leaf to save Johnsy from dying of pneumonia. She was counting the leaves on the vine as they fell and when the last one fell, she would die. Mr. Behrman got pneumonia after staying in the cold rain all night.
