For most of my life I have always wanted to see an opera performance in person, but for some reason or other I never got the courage to do so. Perhaps, it was my being scared of not being able to understand it or the fear of feeling less cultured. It is a very intimating thing to do especially if you have never been exposed to it and the only thing you knew about it was that it was done in a foreign language making. In addition, for as long as I can remember Opera has been seen as a very elite form of entertainment that only certain the rich can attend.
Finally, on November 11, 2005, I attended my first opera at the New York City Opera House. The opera was "The Barber of Seville." I really enjoyed my experience. However it was a bit overwhelming even though I had read the synopsis prior to attending the opera.
