Censorship
Although the first amendment freedom of speech is one of the most revered rights enjoyed by Americans, contrary to what many believe, this right is not absolute. States can rightfully regulate certain speech that is harmful to all citizens, such as libel, obscenity, and speech that provokes violence. Throughout the past decade, the government has increasingly proscribed types of speech that were once accessible for children on television, compact discs, and even video games. Because of the potentially harmful effects of excessive sex and violence, laws censoring these materials to protect children are necessary.
Violence on television is viewed by children nationwide daily. A leading psychiatric organization claims that by the age eighteen, an American youth will have seen 16,000 simulated murders and 200,000 acts of violence.
