The harm minimisation policy suggests that some drugs can be consumed at safe levels. Discuss this in relation to tobacco, alcohol, analgesics, cannabis and heroin.

The notion of harm minimisation is based on the belief that drug use is a common and normal part of our society. To try and prevent drug use from occurring is futile. Rather, the main focus of the harm reduction approach is to prevent or reduce the harms associated with drug use. This statement, taken from a high school drug program called “Drug Sense”, basically sums up the philosophy behind the harm minimisation concept. The policy is on the opposite end of the spectrum to the other main drug policy, Zero Tolerance. As the name suggests, zero tolerance policies aim to remove all legal or illicit drug use completely and though this is not really plausible, it still brings out some good results.
