An Interpretation of “Young Goodman Brown”
Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown” is a short story about a man trying to keep his faith alive and at the same time acknowledges the evil that is trying to consume him. The onset of Hawthorne’s short story produces the personality of Young Goodman Brown. Brown is trying to be the ideal Puritan man that represents good living and strong faith, but Satan himself is deceiving his true naïve character. As the story unravels, the illusion of the pure lifestyle around him begins to shatter as the revelation of evil that is taken place in his community as well as himself starts to surface.
In the beginning you are introduced to Brown’s wife, Faith. During the read you can clearly discern how important Faith is to him in both his marriage and in his religion.
