In the 1820’s, a large number of Irish immigrants began migrating to America. The majority of these were male, as they came to work in certain areas and in certain job fields, such as canal building. The groups of those coming from Ireland, were not colonized but immigrated. They first set up in areas such as Boston, New York City, and Providence. As the years passed, and the 1850’s came along, some immigrants found themselves setting up home in Canada also; particularly in Toronto and Ontario. Between the years 1820 and 1860, the Irish made up over one third of all the immigrants to the United States. Upon arrival, they often crammed into shanty towns, living in shacks cobbled together out of discarded boards and other debris. Sanitation was haphazard at best. There were no streets but only paths which turned into ditches after a heavy rain. They began their life in America with low......
