Famine, Affluence, and Morality
Peter Singer

Peter Singer teaches bioethics at the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University. He lectures in his article, Famine, Affluence, and Morality, that it is morally wrong for affluent people to waste their money on unnecessary goods while other people are starving. According to Singer, if we can prevent suffering without sacrificing anything of equivalent moral importance, then we are morally obligated to. By providing monetary assistance to aid the hungry, we can prevent suffering around the globe. People who are financially capable should give money away until they have sacrificed something of moral importance, even if it requires one to drastically diminish their standard of living.
