Throughout time cultures have created some type of language as a way to communicate with each other. These languages were not always a spoken language, but a language that used symbols to communicate a meaning. Language plays an important role in the day to day lives of people throughout the world. Language is used to communicate with each other, to think, and to teach. People think in words, and without an understanding of language it would be difficult to process thoughts. One can realize the importance of language by facing the challenge of raising a newborn child. This newborn child has no understanding of language, their only ways of communication is crying. They cry when they are hungry, sleepy, sick, etc. The challenge of being a parent is determining what the child's cry means at that given time.
