In the Merchant of Venice rhetoric is used in many different forms, oratory, persuasion through language control, and proceedings in a court room. Although Shakespeare deviated from the old form of written rhetoric, he used oratory rhetoric in his plays as a means of his characters manipulating the situation to suit their needs. During the time period that “The Merchant of Venice” was set in, Italians believed that greatness was achieved through eloquence. Although Cicero’s teachings did not point to it, the days of written rhetoric were all but gone.
In the scene where Antonio went to the Shylock for the bond for Bessanio, the Shylock tells Antonio how he is shocked that he would come to him as a Christian to get money. He knows that it is going against the Christian teachings to borrow money and pay interest on it, so he tells Antonio that he is going to grant him forgiveness for all that he had done to him in the past. He plays on the fact that Antonio feels himself......
