A great man by the name of General Douglas MacArthur once said, “Duty, Honor, Country. Those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be.” What MacArthur is saying is that peoples’ duty is to their country. In our democratic republic, the United States of America, the success of our country requires the participation of our citizens. “National service generally means citizen participation in a mandatory program—sponsored or conducted by the government—to address a national public need. Typically, young adults are required to serve full-time for a limited period of time, from six months to one or more years.” (3) However nation service is not limited to just military duty.
