Hiram Ulysses Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio on 27th April, 1822, the first child of Jesse Grant and Hannah Simpson.
In 1823, a year after his birth, Grant’s family relocated to Georgetown, Ohio. It was there that Grant received his earliest education, and he resided there for the majority of his childhood and teenage years - up until the months after March 3rd, 1839 when he was appointed to West Point Military Academy.
On May 29th, 1839 Grant arrived at the US Military Academy in West Point, New York. Upon arrival, Grant discovered that the Congressman who appointed him, Thomas Hamer, had used his middle name before his forename, thus registering him as ‘Ulysses Hiram Grant’. Grant later formally changed this to ‘Ulysses Simpson Grant’ – the name he would continue to use for the remainder of his life.
