An Imaginary Life has 3 general themes; they are language, mythology, and boundaries, and it is the latter that this essay shall focus upon.
An Imaginary Life is classified as a Postmodern Romantic novel. What set Romantic literature apart from other types of writing was that in Romantic literature everywhere, imagination was praised over reason, emotions over logic, and intuition over science - making way for a vast body of literature of great sensibility and passion, literature that emphasised content over form.
Similar to Malouf's first novel Jonno, in that it talks about exile, An Imaginary Life tells the tale of the Roman poet Ovid, who is witty, self-indulgent, and metropolitan, and the one-time darling of Rome. Ovid is banished, from Rome, the centre of the Roman world, to the edge of the known Roman world before the beginning of the novel, and ends up in a primitive, isolated village called Tomis (now the Romanian city of Constanza), on the banks of the River Ister (now......
