The multi-factorial model is the belief that health and illness are a function of multiple factors involving biological, psychological, and cultural domains, and their interactions. In laymen’s terms this means that many different factors come together to cause or prevent illnesses. Some people seem to catch every bug that goes around. If you take a step back and look at all aspects of their life then you will find that the combination of biological factors, environmental factors, personal behavior, and stressors may be the cause for their weaker immune system. The opposite is also true. If someone has very little family history of illness, minimal stress in their life, a positive attitude, and a good healthy lifestyle, they may never get sick. The multi-factorial model helps doctors and psychologists to diagnose and treat illnesses by allowing the doctor to break down the causes of an individual patient’s illness.
