The Romantic Era (1798 – 1832) brought forward-thinkers into the mainstream like Samuel Taylor Coleridge and John Keats. These poets used poetry to ask questions about life, to praise and teach. They told stories and ushered in a new movement that used imagination, fancy and imagery.
Lyrical Ballads, published in 1798, marked the beginning of this period. Why did a book start a movement? Lyrical Ballads was a departure from ‘traditional poetry’ and a dip into something newer. Coleridge and Wordsworth (the authors) created a kind of poetry that was easier to understand. Even the countrymen read, and enjoyed Lyrical Ballads. Hence, the Romantic Era begun.
