The end of the Cold War brought with it a global concern on how to define a countries security interests in a world where the security architecture of the previous half century was no longer relevant. Canada was no different and during the next decade it implemented a range of reviews releasing in 2005 Canada the latest Defence Policy Statement: A Role of Pride and Influence in the World. This was the first review of Canada’s Defence policy since the release of the 1994 Defence White Paper. This 2005 policy statement builds on the National Security Policy and the International Policy Statement which single out the Canadian Forces as a critical element in responding to threats and other emergencies; both domestic and international. It was herald as a vital new vision, firmly grounded in the realities of the post-Cold War, post-September 11th world.
