Active listening is the most important key to effective personal and career communication. Paul Tillich once quoted “The first duty of love is to listen.” I cannot agree more with that saying. Not only does listening convey love but it conveys respect, which is essential at home and in employer and employee hierarchical relationships. The more people use their active listening skills the easier it becomes to communicate in their work relationships and also at home. Being ignorant or unknowing is never an excuse for poor communication.
One example where poor listening habits had a negative impact on my life was when I was a teenage volunteer at the Veterans Medical Hospital in California. I was working in the pharmacy arranging prescriptions and bagging them up for patients. One of the duties was to print out labels and keep track of narcotics that were being distributed.
