The Meaning of Nationalism
All Quiet on the Western Front, an inspiring novel written by Erich Maria Remarque, has a theme that can relate to many people. Since the novel mostly has to do with war, the theme is nationalism or showing pride of one owns country.
In the novel, nationalism is portrayed as a hollow and hypocritical idea. Nationalistic ideas seduce Paul and his many friends into joining the army. For example, Kat says to Kropp, “I wish I were back home (Remarque 65).” Nationalism got deeply embedded in their minds that now they have to repent and regret. When the soldiers fight, it quickly drags then into the relevance of nationalism and into the horror of war.
The way that Kantorek and Himmelstoss fight on the battlefield accentuates the inappropriateness out of old ideals in modern warfare. Remarque illustrates that soldiers don’t fight on the front for glory or their nation but for their own means of survival. Many of the soldiers have to kill other just so......
