Scopes Trial

In the past, there had been awful consequences that resulted from theocratic governments and loss of the freedom of speech. For example, the bloody Crusades resulted from countries that were too closely guided by religious beliefs and racist internment camps during World War Two resulted when citizens were not allowed to tell the government that they were committing a crime. Though not as serious as internment camps or crusades, the Scopes Trial also resulted from a government that was too connected with religion and the loss the freedom of speech. It all began when a teacher named John Scopes taught evolution to students at a state funded school as an open protest against a law barring the teaching of evolution. In March 1925, the Tennessee legislature passed a measure known as the Butler Act that made it illegal for teachers in the public schools to present as factual any theory of creation other than the biblical account.
