Environmental Dialysis

Dialysis is the separation of components of a solution by diffusion through a semi-permeable membrane which is capable of passing certain ions or molecules while rejecting others. It was discovered by Thomas Graham in 1861 (Petrucci and Hill, 2002). The most common dialysis is the one produced by our kidneys which remove excess electrolytes from blood. Unfortunately some diseases can stop this process in our kidneys and this process has to be done by a dialysis machine. Nevertheless, dialysis can be used in many aspects because it acts as a selective filter process. One of the most important uses of dialysis discovered by scientists nowadays is for environmental clean up. In this paper, we will explain how dialysis is used for environmental clean up, the process and the results of it.
