A Separate Peace, a novel written by John Knowles, is set during the summer of 1942 and tells of Gene Forrester, a student at Devon School in New Hampshire. It revolves around his life at boarding school with his close friend, Finny who constantly enjoys getting into mischief. He persuades Gene to participate in these mischieves, one of quite an importance being jumping out of a tree into a river, which they turn into a ritual. Gene envies Finny’s athletic abilities and secretly, believes that Finny possibly envies Gene’s academic achievements. This belief turns to hatred as Gene holds a suspicion that Finny is possibly trying to distract Gene from his studies. One day, after being in a state of shock from Finny saying he would like to see Gene succeed, they go to the tree for their ritual. But Gene’s knee bends and shakes the tree branch, causing Finny to fall and break his leg and even though everyone claimed it was an accident, after Finny was
