Dr. Martin Luther King, eloquent and educated civil rights leader, while imprisoned in Birmingham Jail in April of 1963, responded to a criticism made by eight clergymen from Alabama with “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.” Later that same year, in August, he delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. In these documents, King uses allusion, imagery, and metaphor to show that the Negro people need to act as one immediately to end racial discrimination.
King uses allusions in his speech and letter to help his audiences realize the truth to his words and actions. However, the kinds of allusions made are different in the speech and the letter. In the speech, he is speaking to many people with many different backgrounds and levels of education. Therefore, Dr. King chooses to use allusions to things most people would know about and recognize, such as the constitution and patriotic songs.
