Physician Assisted Suicide
I was 17 years old when I watched my grandmother die from cancer. A once striking, vibrant, and robust lady had been reduced to diapers and a feeding tube. Eventually she lost the ability to communicate and didn’t recognize family members. She slipped into a coma and died on April 25, 1979. My grandmother often expressed her desire to “go quickly and painlessly”. She didn’t want to be a burden on the family, and wanted to be left with some dignity in the end. She obviously did not get her wish. As her granddaughter, watching the scene unfold, I couldn’t help but wish the same; not just for her, but for myself when (or if) the time came. As adolescents we are trained and educated with the goal of becoming responsible adults. We are expected to take charge of our lives and are given legal, educational, and financial tools to become productive citizens.
