The film begins by introducing the viewer to the main character Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), We are given two contrasting views of him, As it beginnings we are see Andy as a confused and drunken man, wanting to take revenge, using alcohol and in possession of a gun. We view him in court for the trial of his wife and her lovers death, in the next few scenes. And this lays down the plot for the story, what happened to his wife and her lover, what did he do and what will happen to him…
The body language of Andy and the mellow dramatic jazzy love song that plays from his car, work to form a mood of comatose confusion…about where he is, why is he there, what does he want to do…
The camera angles used in the beginning scenes indicate to us key elements referred to later, such as the alcohol and the bullets, the dark red ambiance around him, and the view of a up market house in the distance, lets us know that this is not where Andy stays......
