1. How are human essentially evil?
All humans have both good and evil welling up inside of them. They both coexist in a single being, unable to survive without the other. In The Giver Jonas gets to see the evilness in the acts of his own father. The quote, “Once again, as he had on the playing field, he felt the choking sensation. Once again he saw the face of the light-haired, bloodied soldier as life left his eyes. The memory came back. He killed it! My father killed it! Jonas said to himself, stunned at what he was realizing. He continued to stare at the screen numbly.”(150) states that even in the hands of some one as loving and caring as a Nurturer is capable of hurting and killing the innocent even if it was not out of free will. The evilness that is kept within all humans is the factor that they can extinguish innocent life with faulty reasoning.
