Two great artists...
Jacques - Louis David (More commonly known as David), a great artist from the 18th century, and Edward Hopper, a somewhat modern artist who began his career in the 1920's.

Jacques - Louis David basically developed the Neo-classical style while studying in Rome. When he returned back to his home in France, he became the leading artist of that style and could practically call it his own. The neo-classical style was imitated by other rising artists, beaten by the critics, and went through other hardships of the like. This sent David into an artistic decline, but he again reclaimed his title and his original works a few years after things started to go downhill. He can now be called one of the best artists of his time.
