Andrew Jackson of Tennessee was elected the 7th President of the United States in 1828. It marked the first time in the history of the presidency that a candidate from a state west of the Appalachians had been elected. Jackson’s election was known as a “victory of the common man- the small farmer and city worker- over the aristocracy of money, factory, and land.” (Estrin, 1968) Even his nickname, “Old Hickory,” gave people the impression that he was a tough, no-nonsense man who they could depend on.
Andrew Jackson was born on March 15, 1767. Although his family was poor and could not offer him a good education, he was able to help himself. With a lot of hard work and determination, he learned how to read and write. Jackson eventually became a lawyer and later a judge.
