What Is Autism?
The word ‘autism’ often evokes an image of a person with the most severe symptoms of a mental disorder; however, autism is an umbrella term for a wide spectrum of disorders, referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).
The term ‘spectrum’ is crucial to understanding autism, because of the wide range of intensity, symptoms and behaviours, types of disorders, and variation between individuals. Children with autism spectrum disorders may be non-verbal and asocial, as in the case of many with ‘classic’ autism, or, as recognised on the other end of the spectrum, children may also develop a high-functioning type of autism such as Asperger’s Syndrome.
ASD specifically refers to a group of developmental disorders that are diagnosed through communication and social problems. This group is made up of five main disorders.
