Depression is a dark feeling, but even more a slow and bitter death. Avoiding it is the only real way in which the African Americans could save their life. In I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Angelou portrays many of these difficult times that they went through and how the African Americans coped with. Overall, life in Stamps was terrible and to muddle through it was the only way to feel vulnerable to oneself; to overcome those feelings and discriminations to stop from being engulfed into a black hole where there would be no way out.
The true reason for the despair went down to the discrimination that these African Americans went through. No matter how much respect was given to, a black person, it was unparallel to even the “powhitetrash” (pg 28). At the Store Momma addressed the girls with “miz” (pg 42) which symbolized where a black person was regarded as. Whereas in the black community Momma was highly regarded. Yet still Momma like everyone else gets by with this......
