In the very beginning of the book we are given a visual of the immigrants on the boat coming in to Ellis Island through the eyes of Father. On this boat, Tateh was just one of the “million dark eyes staring” (pg. 13), which shows that Tateh and his family could be any immigrants family coming to America in this time. Another immediate clue that these immigrants represent all of the families who came through Ellis Island in the era of Ragtime is that their names are mother and father in Yiddish and their daughter is simply called Little Girl, which gives the reader a clear perspective that Tateh, Mameh, and the little girl are stereotypical Jewish-American immigrants. Their lifestyle in America is also common to that of immigrants; Mameh and the little girl sew all day, and Tateh works in the street as a peddler. The struggles they are faced with show typically the way immigrants lived, with being show disrespect in the communities, as well as having severe financial problems......
