India, a home of 1.2 billion people on the planet is also the home to 300 million (nearly 25 percent) of the people surviving below the poverty line. Annually, 2.2 million infants and children die of preventable illnesses, 0.1 million mothers die during childbirth, 0.5 million die of tuberculosis and 5 million are suffering from HIV/AIDS. And if that wasn’t enough roughly 20 million people in India are blind and approximately 4 Million, needlessly blind, due to cataracts.
Countries with universal or near universal access to healthcare have single-payer systems in which either a single autonomous public agency or a few coordinated agencies pool resources to finance healthcare. This balances both equity in healthcare as well as to low levels of poverty in these countries. India still relies mostly on out-of-pocket payments making quality healthcare a huge burden on the pocket of the poor and hence making the universal access to healthcare elusive.......
