How has being able to sustain an economic profit when dealing with intense competition kept Wal-Mart the leader in retail sales? Barriers to entry are the answer. Wal-Mart is known for doing something that other’s cannot do. They are able to sustain their profit based on their size, capital requirements, distribution channels, reputation and brand name, guarantees, product differentiation, and strategic assets.
First off their size has given them several advantages over other retailers. Their stores are large and the layout provides the consumer with an ease of finding the items they are looking for. You do not have to walk all over the store in order to locate items you are looking. They are grouped in categories like most large department stores.
Wal-Mart started as a five a dime store several years ago by Sam Walton. He was able to come up with ideas that allowed his shoppers to purchase......
