All through out middle school, the basis of sex education was abstinence. If we asked questions about condoms, or pregnancy they would just repeat over and over “Remember, abstinence is the only 100% effective way to…” They would trail off and so would our attention span. Teen pep is a lot more interactive and informative. It was great learning about sex education from kids my own age, it just made asking questions a lot more comfortable. I want to be a peer educator because the program really helped me last year with decision making. More then anything, I felt informed and independent; for the first time, I had options instead of just “ABSTINENCE!” I was also in PULSE last year around the same time I had teen pep’s sexuality programs. I’m really accepting of other people’s sexuality and sexual-based choices. For the past few years I have been helping a friend get through the hardships of ‘coming out’ about being a homosexual.
