1. Situation
a. 1st week of Sep Br 2nd Army was held up along Albert Canal from Antwerp to Mastritch, due to by German resistance.
b. After fierce fighting the Br adv and were stopped 15 miles of Eindhoven.
c. German str in Holland at that time was between 300,000 to 4,00.000 tps.
d. 1st US Army reached Aachen and was in line with 2nd Br Army.
e. 3rd US Army was advancing towards Metz after crossing Mossel.
f. 1st Can Army had taken Antwrep on 4/9 but Scheldt Estuary was held by Germans hence it was not possible to use it as a port.
2. Reasons for Launching Market Garden
a. A sudden thrust from Albert Canal to Arnhem ie 70 miles would trap the Germans west of this thrust in Holland and sever the comm south of Arnhem.
b. Fall of Arnhem would allow Allies to by pass Seigfried line and Plains of Northern Germany would be op en an adv.
c. To speed up the allied adv, which was halted short of Eindhoven ie (Br Army).
d. German Forces blocked the northern adv......
