There are many ways in which Shakespeare’s Othello may be read. Oliver Parker’s 1995 adaptation is among the many that reflect the director’s interpretation of the play. Act 2 Scene 3 is one of the scenes which epitomise this difference in interpretation. While for Shakespeare, this event acts as a stepping stone of Iago’s manipulation of Othello and serves to strengthen the antagonist’s Machiavellian nature, Parker interprets this scene as not only showing Iago’s conniving and cowardly nature, but also the theme of the power of love and importance of reputation, which are prevalent throughout his film.
