Human Sexuality
In the world today, sex seems to be everywhere; it’s in TV, movies, advertising, and everyday conversation. Human sexuality is “how people experience and express themselves as sexual beings” (Wikipedia). As human beings we all are sexual beings, it is in our nature. The way that we as humans use, or misuse, various words and phrases about human sexuality have a direct effect on the reality of human sexuality in our culture. This effect occurs in two general ways.
The first way we use various symbols to affect human sexuality is to maintain its cultural definition. I feel that Kenneth Burke’s view of symbolism (and language) is the best way to represent this maintenance of human sexuality. Burke says that “What one human discovers can be shared with others, and then expanded upon, through symbolic representation” (Purdue).
