It is an old question whether or not some physical and psychological characteristics are the result of genetics (heredity), or if hormones influence these traits. Modern psychology and medicine says that both factors influence behavior and physical attributes.
Hormones can cause depression or physical symptoms if they are imbalanced. Some of these reactions are normal, such as an adrenaline rush in a stressful situation. Adrenaline makes a person more ready to react and more likely to, and so in certain situations it is in a person’s best interest to have a heightened level of the hormone. If the level were to stay elevated there would be negative physical and emotional effects, if the level never increased the person may not react to a threat, so the body must maintain a balance of hormone levels depending on what is occurring at that time.
