After Macbeth, thane of Glamis, and the Scots defeat the Irish, King Duncan declares that Macbeth was the hero of the battle. He then precedes to name Macbeth thane of Cawdor after the prior thane was killed in battle. After the battle Macbeth meets with the witches, whom tell him that he will be king one day.
In act 1 scene 5, the role of Macbeth happens to be quite small but one can see the depth and trance he is in. One of the main themes of the play is what happens when someone’s strong ambition for something goes unrestrained. In this case it is Macbeth’s strong want to have power and prestige, and his wife driving him to do it. Once entering the scene, Macbeth, does not speak much but only because of his mental state. Macbeth normally would not be the type of individual to commit evils crimes, let alone kill someone. So now once so close to committing the murder that will obtain him the power he desires, he seems to almost be in a daze.
