Early Onset Bipolar Disorder (EOBPD) is a very controversial diagnosis that has sometimes been overlooked in the past. The mental health community is beginning to understand that it is possible for children to have bipolar disorder. This has sent pediatric doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists, and counselors scrambling to figure out what types of therapy and medication can be used to help these children.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), approximately 7% of children seen in psychiatric facilities do meet the criteria to be diagnosed as bipolar. Also, the Child and Adolescent Bipolar Foundation (CABF) sites that along with this, “it is suspected that a significant number of children diagnosed with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) have early-onset bipolar disorder instead of, or along with, ADHD.” Depression is another area in which it is believed that a good portion of children diagnosed as depressed actually have bipolar......
