The first work is from the Basin from China, dated 8000 – 2000 B.C. The pottery is earthenware with painted decoration with black lines and its diameter is 11 in. The pottery was found in the Yellow River basin. They created this pottery by heaping coils of clay into a desired shape and then using paddles and scrapers to smooth the surface. There is evidence that they relied on domesticated animals and farming instead of hunting and gathering. The pottery excavated from graves has red or black pigments. The potteries from dwellings do not have this color in them. This type of pottery is some form of communication between the cultures. The use of jade is a tool to design their pottery. Jade was thought to be used in the ceremonial role for Neolithic cultures. The Chinese artistic tradition traces back to the middle of Neolithic period around 4000 B.C.
