The Legend of Jesse Owens

James Cleveland Owens born in small town Oakville, Alabama on September 12, 1913. He was poor and sickly while at a young age. Jesses parents were both uneducated and former slaves as a child because of their dark skin color. At a young age Jesse parents feared J.C “ James Cleveland” they called him for short would be stereotyped, ridiculed, and abused by white bigots who lived in that area of the Deep South. Like Americans J.C would one day learn that his ancestors came to this country on a boat. Unlike the white immigrants, his people came willingly. He describes them as, “ Constrained by shackles, they were among the fortunate’s who survived the tedious, exhausting, and dangerous voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to toil as slaves”( Nuwer 9). As a child he was a hard working boy who helped his mother out with picking cotton in the Alabama cotton fields.

The most influential thing for Jesse was his mentoring track coach Charles Riley......
