Looking for Love
In Erdrich’s Love Medicine, the author creates a wonderfully controversial character by the name of Lulu Lamartine. In the chapter “The Island,” Lulu’s mother abandons her as a young child. Although the book barely mentions the painful experience of her mother’s leaving, the consequential effects on Lulu’s identity are undeniable. In Lulu’s young life her mother “tore herself away” from her leaving a very lonely child who “never grew from the curve” of her mother’s arms (68). The resulting emptiness compels Lulu throughout her life to look for ways to fill that cavernous void. This unquestionably painful incident shapes Lulu into an unfulfilled, but strong and very prideful woman, and the unimpeachable mother in which she becomes. Being a person who continually looks for the motherly love and acceptance she did not receive as a child, she has many men in her life with whom she bears many children.
