The Arab militias are known more commonly to the people of Darfur as the Janjaweed which means “guns on horseback”, and that is exactly what they are. After the Sudanese government granted the Janjaweed power, these militias began to raid the towns and villages of Darfur (Kahn 8). Hundreds of thousands of innocent men, women and children have been cold-bloodedly murdered by the Janjaweed as the government sits back watches (Darfur Crisis). Not only is the government permitting it to happen, at times they have been known to aid the Janjaweed with aircraft. Yet, Sudan’s government still denies being in control of these Arab militias (Q&A: Sudan’s Darfur Conflict). Once the Janjaweed cross the threshold of a village they kill whoever may be in their path. Many of the women are held as sex slaves and released days or even weeks later, while the more fortunate are raped and then released at the scene (Kahn 5).
