How much control does Odysseus have over his own life?
In Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus does not have much control over his life. There are four main factors that control the life of an ancient Greek, fate, the gods, other mortals, and the person’s decision. However, in The Odyssey, Odysseus is mainly controlled by fate, the gods, and other mortals with little input from his own decisions.
The force that had the biggest control over Odysseus’ life was fate. Because most of what Odysseus did was already prophesied, fate had already decided that Odysseus would do what he did. An example of this occurs when Odysseus encountered Polyphemus. After Odysseus blinded Polyphemus, he told Odysseus that what Odysseus did was prophesized. “…these things he foretold to come;/ my great eye lost, and at Odysseus’ hands…” (pg 160 line 558-559).This shows that even if Odysseus did not choose to blind Polyphemus then and in the way he did, he would have still blinded Polyphemus in some......
