During my course work in graduate school, I learned the importance of maintaining professional boundaries when working with clients. Counselors must be mindful of boundary parameters and they must keep in mind that, although the counseling session is based on an equal partnership in theory, a power differential between the client and the therapist still exist on a practical level. Counselors must be mindful of the counseling dynamics between therapist and clients especially as it relates to having sexual relationships with clients. I firmly believe that all states should criminalize sexual misconduct by therapist and I also believe that licensure boards should indefinitely suspend the license of any mental health professional that is found guilty of sexual misconduct. Sex between patients and psychotherapist is now uniformly branded as wrong and unacceptable (insert reference here).
