Poetic opportunities overlooked from science

Poetry and science have usually resided on opposite ends of the spectrum, poetry appealing to the imaginative, right-brain side while science requiring more rational, left-brain thought. In the chapter, “Drawing Room of the Dukes”, Richard Dawkins laments the seeming inability of poets to appreciate the wonders of science. He draws on examples ranging from selected verses from famous poets to popular television shows to emphasize his point that poetry can take on deeper meanings and reach new levels of insight not by exploring fictional world that stretches the imagination, but rather by focusing on the real wonders revealed through science. Dawkins’ examples support this thesis in two ways: first, by showing how most of society has a severe lack of understanding of basic scientific concepts and second, by pointing out that traditional media, such as poetry and television, have reflected this attitude in their work.......
