There are various ways an author can write a short story and different techniques that engage the reader in the story. One way of achieving this is by convincing through the senses. Flannery O’Connor says, “No reader who doesn’t actually experience, who isn’t made to feel, the story is going to believe anything the fiction writer merely tells him.” By using sensory detail it creates a feeling of compassion, thought, and emotion in the reader and provides a sense of reality. In the stories, “The Thrill of the Grass” by W.P Kinsella and “The Midnight Man by Loren D. Estleman, the use of sensory detail pulls the readers into the story as well as expanding their imagination.
