HOW DOES THE LAVA LAMP WORK?
Lava Lamp is a novelty device which is used for decorative purposes rather than illumination. It was discovered by Edward Craven Walker, an Englishman in 1960s and became popular after the US company Lava Manufacturing Corp got its patent in 1965.
Lava Lamp is a cylinder shaped glass filled with a liquid which contains colorful blobs floating up and down, making the person looking at it enjoy this nice view. Even if the lamp’s working mechanism seems as an amazing process, it is based on very simple scientific principles.
The Lava Lamp consists of an illuminating bulb, a glass bottle containing a transparent oil and a solid waxy compound. In order to obtain the floating blobs, the oil and the solid compound should be immiscible and they should have different, but similar densities.
