In 1991, a study at the University of Berkeley which is known for its diverse campus found that 70% of undergraduates would like to meet more students with ethnic and cultural backgrounds different from their own.

In 1997, the University of Michigan found students friendship patterns closely reflected the make up of their high schools and neighborhoods.

Racial grouping in college happens mainly due to stress and nervousness and most people’s coping strategy for this is to join their peers of similar background instead of branching out into a diverse group. They feel less anxious around people similar to them and clumping occurs. When a classroom on the first day seems to be segregated into groups of ethnic and cultural backgrounds this is usually due to this.
