The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is a special panel made up of scientists and researchers who are studding the Earth’s climate and how it is evolving. In 2007 the panel released a climate synthesis report which was based on research done by three working groups of scientists from the IPCC and it provides a great deal of scientific data on global warming. In the report it is documented that eleven of the past twelve years have ranked among the warmest years since global surface temperature started to be recorded in 1850. Rising sea level is directly correlated to warming in the atmosphere. Due to melting from ice caps, glaciers, and polar ice sheets the global average sea level is rising at a rate of 3.1 mm/yr since 1993 and shows no sign of slowing. During the second half of the 20th century, in countries throughout the northern hemisphere, it was very likely that they were the warmest years in the past 500 years on earth (IPCC 2007).
